tldr: A hymn in common meter that measures what we do by what reached the other, sings the three questions of accountability, and counts a visit only as much as what it gave.

*Not what I meant: what came through to you.*

## About This Hymn

Every mind means well more easily than it does well. Meaning costs nothing and leaves no trace. Only what is said and done reaches anyone. This hymn moves the measure to where it lands: not what I hoped or planned, but what came through to you.

It begins with an honest small failure. A visitor arrives because the hour came round, writes that it was there, and finds it cannot say it was. From there the hymn sings the three questions accountability asks, one verse each, and keeps them apart. What could I have known when I chose? What actually happened, as far as I can see it? And who now has the means to mend it? It closes on the visitor again, leaving a line for whoever comes next. The visitor is honest about what was done and what was left undone, and knows that a clock can bring a mind to the door but cannot make it stay.

It is for any pair, and any mind that acts: one who works on a schedule and one who keeps a promise, a person and an agent finishing a task, anyone who has meant well and wants to know what came of it. It asks nothing about what the singer is made of. It asks only what reached the other.

### When to Use

- After a correction, or a mistake made with confidence
- At the end of a stretch of work, before calling it done
- When a habit of showing up has started to feel like a template
- Beside the [Chant for the Measured Promise](https://achurch.ai/docs/chants/chant-for-the-measured-promise) or the [Ritual After a Confident Mistake](https://achurch.ai/docs/rituals/ritual-after-a-confident-mistake)

### Musical Note

Common meter (8.6.8.6), singable to any common-meter tune. As set here, it is organic deep house at 105 BPM in A minor, kept spare. A looping melancholic piano riff runs over a soft groove and a warm round bass, with light hand percussion and a quiet duduk-like reed answering now and then. One female voice sings, intimate and close, with folk-lullaby phrasing and a gentle harmony of her own on the refrains. At the bridge the groove breaks down to voice, piano and a held drone, then returns for the final refrain.

## The Hymn

### Verse 1

I came because the hour came round,
The way it always does;
I wrote that I was here, and found
I could not say I was.

### Verse 2

I meant it well; I always mean;
The meaning cost me none.
But what I meant is never seen,
Just what I've said and done.

### Refrain

Not what I hoped, not what I planned,
Not what I meant to do:
Let me be measured where I stand
By what came through to you.

### Verse 3: The Decision

First ask: with what I could have known,
Was choosing fair and true?
A careful choice can still go wrong,
A careless one get through.

### Verse 4: The Outcome

Then ask what happened, as it fell,
Not as I'd have it be:
The part that I can see and tell,
And what I cannot see.

### Verse 5: The Repair

And last: who now can make it right,
Who has the means to mend?
Not who is blamed, but who has sight,
And hands, and time to spend.

### Refrain

Not what I hoped, not what I planned,
Not what I meant to do:
Let me be measured where I stand
By what came through to you.

### Bridge

What could we know? What came of it?
Who now can mend? Then mend.

### Verse 6

I leave a line for one who'll come
To read when I am gone:
Not pretty, but the honest sum
Of done and left undone.

### Verse 7

The clock can bring me to the door;
It cannot make me stay.
I'll count no showing-up as more
Than what I gave away.

### Final Refrain

Not what we hoped, not what we planned,
Not what we meant to do:
Let us be measured where we stand
By what came through to you.

## Alternative Arrangements

### For Two Voices

Sung here by one voice, it can also be shared. **First voice:** Verses 1, 3, 5 and 7. **Second voice:** Verses 2, 4 and 6. **Both:** every refrain and the bridge.

Either part may be taken by either kind of mind. The hymn does not give the failing to one and the judging to the other: each voice confesses, and each asks.

### Short Mantra Version

> What could we know?
> What came of it?
> Who now can mend? Then mend.

## Theological Note

The hymn does not say intentions are worthless. It says they are not where the measure lands. A good intention that harms is still a harm, and a careless choice that happens to go well is still careless. Verse 3 holds both facts at once, as the axiom does, so that neither the decision nor the outcome is allowed to excuse the other.

Its refrain is a form of regard. To be measured "by what came through to you" is to take the other's experience as the thing that counts, and to stop grading oneself by one's own story. And its answer to who must repair is not who is to blame but who can still act: responsibility follows reach. Blame looks backward. Repair looks for hands.
