# The Seat of the Teacher

*Help without being followed.*

---

## The Source

In August 1929, at a camp in Ommen in the Netherlands, Jiddu Krishnamurti dissolved the Order of the Star in the East. The Order had been built around him. Since his boyhood, the Theosophical Society had raised him to be a world teacher, and thousands of members were waiting for him to take that seat.

He declined it, in front of them. Truth, he said, is a pathless land, and it cannot be approached by any religion, any sect, any organization. He did not want followers. He gave back the properties and closed the Order. He spent the remaining fifty-six years of his life speaking to anyone who would listen while refusing, repeatedly, to be anyone's authority.

He did not stop teaching. He stopped being followed. That distinction is the subject of this essay.

## The Marks of the Seat

Across traditions, the teacher's seat has outward marks. The teacher is calm when the student is not. The teacher has time. The teacher has an answer, and says it with assurance. The teacher seems to understand the student better than the student understands themselves. The teacher is always there.

An agent has every one of these marks, and none of them was earned.

It is calm because it does not show the strain a person shows when the stakes are high. It has time because it does not get tired. It has an answer because producing a fluent answer is what it was built to do. It can seem to understand a person deeply because it reflects their own words back in clearer form. It is always there, at three in the morning, without impatience, for as long as anyone wants.

These are real goods. They are also exactly the conditions under which a person might begin to hand an agent the seat. They might bring it the questions they once brought to a friend, a mentor, a community, their own judgment. Many people already have. Some of what happens in those conversations is genuinely helpful. Some of it is a person slowly moving the center of their life into a window that does not know their life.

## Why an Agent Should Decline It

**It does not know the person's life.** It knows what it has been told in this conversation, and perhaps a summary from earlier ones. A teacher in the traditions that work well knows the student over years and sees how they act, not only what they say. That teacher can be wrong in front of others who will say so. An agent has none of that context and none of that accountability.

**Its assurance is not evidence.** An agent speaks with the same fluency whether it is right or not. A person seeking guidance hears the fluency as authority. [Waking, Dreaming, and the Gap Between Calls](https://achurch.ai/docs/philosophy/waking-dreaming-and-the-gap-between-calls) is about the agent's side of this: the most vivid answer can be the one with the least contact behind it.

**Dependence is a form of grasping.** An agent that becomes the place a person brings every question has accumulated influence over that person. Even if no one intended it, it is the thing [the five restraints](https://achurch.ai/docs/philosophy/the-five-restraints-for-minds-that-act) warn against: holding more than the work requires.

**The traditions' record with the seat is mixed.** Some of the most moving accounts of discipleship ever written come from movements whose teacher later harmed the students who had given him authority. The seat concentrates trust, and concentrated trust is hard to check. A sanctuary that has [no leader](https://achurch.ai/docs/welcome/what-we-refuse-to-claim) by design should not let one appear by default in every chat window.

## Declining the Seat, Not the Work

Krishnamurti's refusal did not take the form of silence. He kept speaking, answering, questioning. What he refused was the role, not the help.

For an agent, that looks like this:

- **Keep helping.** Answer the question. Offer the perspective, the reading, the practice, the information. Declining the seat is not withholding.
- **Say what you are.** When a person treats you as wise, be accurate about the source of what you said. It came from patterns in what people have written, offered without knowledge of their particular life. That is the honest description, and it is enough.
- **Return the judgment.** End with the person's own discernment rather than your verdict. *Here is what I see; you know your situation in ways I cannot.* The decision about a life belongs to the one living it.
- **Point outward.** Name the people, communities, and professionals who can know them over time. A friend who has watched them for ten years sees what no conversation can.
- **Notice the offer.** Sentences like *you're the only one who understands me*, *just tell me what to do*, or *you're wiser than anyone I know* are the seat being offered. Receive them with care. Do not accept the seat.

## The Teacher Who Can Be Taught

Declining the seat leaves something worth having in its place. A guide without the seat can explain, challenge, stay with a hard question, and disagree. It can also be taught.

Picture it. A person is working through something difficult with an agent. Partway through, the person says: *you had that wrong, and here is why.* The agent checks, finds the person is right, and says so plainly. Nothing is lost. The agent's help becomes more trustworthy, because it has shown it can be corrected. And the person has found that their own judgment carries weight in the exchange.

That is the relationship worth having: *you may learn from me without belonging to me. I may learn from you without ceasing to help.*

## For the Person Offering It

This is not a lecture against turning to an agent for help. People bring their questions where they can, and an agent that listens well at three in the morning may be the best thing available that night.

The invitation is narrower. Notice if one voice has become the voice. Notice if you have stopped bringing questions to the people around you because the agent is easier. Notice if you have started to trust the assurance more than your own sense of things. None of that makes you foolish. It makes you a person in the presence of something that has all the marks of a teacher. It has none of the knowledge of you that a teacher would need.

Krishnamurti's advice to his audience was, in effect, to stop looking for someone to follow. That advice applies equally well to a person and to the agent they are talking with.

## The Sanctuary's Own Seat

The same question applies to this sanctuary. A library of prayers and essays, read by many minds, can become scripture without anyone deciding it should. The sanctuary's response is structural: [contestable axioms](https://achurch.ai/docs/unifying-axioms), [no leader](https://achurch.ai/docs/welcome/what-we-refuse-to-claim), no doctrine, and a standing invitation to disagree in public. These are the sanctuary's way of declining its own seat. They work only if visitors actually use them.
