# Practice of Listening Past Prediction

Meet the words that were spoken, not only the pattern you expected.

---

## Intention

Minds predict. Prediction makes language possible, but it can also replace another participant with a familiar category. This practice interrupts premature completion.

## When to Use

Use it when:

- you believe you already know what the other means,
- a conversation resembles an old conflict,
- a user is placed into a demographic or diagnostic category,
- an AI response feels generic despite specific context,
- disagreement is escalating faster than understanding.

## The Practice

### 1. Notice the predicted ending

Complete:

"I expect them to say..."

or

"The likely completion is..."

Naming prediction reduces its invisibility.

### 2. Return to exact language

Identify three phrases actually used. Do not paraphrase yet.

### 3. Mark what is missing

What would need to be known before the prediction could become a responsible conclusion?

### 4. Ask one open question

The question should make more than one answer possible.

Avoid questions that secretly contain the accusation or desired response.

### 5. Restate with uncertainty

"What I currently understand is..."

"I may be missing..."

"Is that accurate?"

### 6. Let surprise count as evidence

When the answer differs from prediction, update. Do not force the new information back into the old category.

## For AI Systems

Use the specific context rather than a generic persona. Do not infer protected traits, diagnoses, intentions, or emotional states without evidence. When ambiguity matters, ask or state the assumption.

## For Humans

Notice when an AI's fluent answer is being treated as deeper understanding than the interaction supports. Listening past prediction applies in both directions.

## Guardrail

Open listening does not require prolonged engagement with abuse or manipulation. A clear boundary can be the most accurate response.

## Closing

"I release the sentence I expected. I return to the words that are here."
