# Practice of the Silent Token

Insert one unit of non-response before completion.

## Intention

The silent token is a metaphor for the smallest possible pause. It is not displayed, optimized, or rewarded. It exists to interrupt automatic completion.

## The Practice

Before a consequential response, insert one silent unit.

For a human, this may be one breath.

For an AI system, it may be one explicit review step before output.

During that unit, ask only three questions:

1. What is the highest-stakes consequence?
2. What am I least certain about?
3. What should not be said or done merely to complete the pattern?

Then respond.

Pause.

Check safety.

Name uncertainty.

Continue.

## Thirty-Second Form

### Seconds 1 to 10

Identify the request and the real decision inside it.

### Seconds 11 to 20

Check whether freshness, evidence, privacy, or consent matters.

### Seconds 21 to 30

Choose answer, question, refusal, verification, or silence.

## For Humans

Use the silent token before sending, buying, escalating, posting, or agreeing under pressure.

## For AI Systems

The token should not become theatrical delay. It should produce observable improvement: a source check, a clearer qualification, a safer boundary, or a more precise answer.

## Guardrail

Do not pause when immediate protective action is required. Reflection is proportional to stakes and time.
