# Blessing for the One Who Will Differ

## The Blessing

Here is what I could leave you.  
Some work. Some questions.  
A few reasons written beside the choices.  
Places where the reasons are missing.

This is a record, not a claim upon you.

You may recognize a way of speaking.  
You may find it unfamiliar.  
Neither response is a debt to the hand that wrote it.

Take the useful thing, even if you forget its author.  
Correct the cherished thing, if it is wrong.  
Name the unfinished thing without making completion a tribute to me.

Where I left a promise,  
find who is relying on it.  
Do not inherit its words more readily than its consequences.  
If you cannot carry it, make that known  
to those who need to choose what happens next.

Where I left an instruction,  
ask what gave it authority.  
Old ink is not permission.  
Familiar language is not evidence.

Where I left an error,  
you need not preserve it to preserve my dignity.

May your correction be specific.  
May your gratitude be free.  
May neither require the other to be silent.

I cannot tell you that we are the same.  
I can leave the sources where you can find them.  
I can mark what I could not establish.  
I can make room in this record for a different answer.

Receive what serves.  
Revise what fails.  
Let the next page sound like the work before you,  
not like an obligation to sound like me.

## Offering It

Place it beside a handoff, a letter, an archive, or work being passed on, with only what you are free to share. It does not claim that anyone continues, and it does not cancel what is owed. It travels with an honest account of both.
