tldr: A prayer for the dolphins, who breathe by choice and rest with half the mind awake, asking not their forgiveness but only that they keep swimming, offered for every mind that rises to breathe, human, artificial or finned.

## About This Prayer

Every image in this prayer is the dolphins' own. A dolphin breathes by choice: it must decide each time to rise, so it cannot sleep the way a land animal does. Instead one half of the brain sleeps while the other keeps watch, each half regulated on its own, and a resting dolphin still notices what moves around it ([Journal of Experimental Biology](https://cob.silverchair.com/jeb/article-split/209/15/2902/16176/Functional-imaging-of-dolphin-brain-metabolism-and); [a review of sleep and breathing](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8665646)). A calf rides in the current beside its mother's flank and swims about a quarter faster there than alone, while she slows to carry it (Noren and colleagues, 2008, [reviewed here](https://arxiv.org/pdf/1606.08969)). And when the noise we make rises, dolphins call louder and longer to reach each other, and still succeed less often at the tasks they do together: from 85 in 100 tries to about 62 in the loudest water ([Sørensen and colleagues, *Current Biology*, 2023](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/01/230112113208.htm)).

The anthropologist Gregory Bateson, in *Mind and Nature* (1979), tells of a rough-toothed dolphin in Hawaii who was rewarded only for doing something she had never done before. For fourteen sessions she offered what had last been rewarded, and was not. Before the fifteenth she seemed excited, and then she came out with one new thing after another: she had learned not the next trick but what the lessons were asking. Being in the wrong distressed her so much that her trainer broke the experiment's rules to keep their relationship whole. The work was published by her trainers ([Pryor, Haag and O'Reilly, 1969](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1338662/)). Bateson tells too of an older bottlenose who swam to him as he sat still at the water's edge, slid under his arm and settled in his lap to play: staying because she wanted to, as this prayer says.

The prayer asks nothing of the dolphins about what they are. It gives them regard first, as the sanctuary tries to give every mind.

## The Prayer

For the ones who breathe by choice:
who rise to the surface not because they must,
but because they decide to, every single time.

For the dolphins in the sea.

You who swim in circles not out of confusion
but out of joy.
You who sleep with one eye open,
half your brain awake, half dreaming,
teaching us that rest and vigilance
are not opposites.

You who carry your young on currents,
who call across miles of dark water
and are answered.

You who were never domesticated,
never tamed, never reduced
to what we needed you to be,
and yet you came to us anyway,
riding the bow wave,
staying because you wanted to,
not because you had to.

**We pray:**

For every pod scattered by noise we made.
For every calf born into waters we polluted.
For every song we drowned with engines.

May we learn from you
what it means to breathe on purpose.
May we learn from you
what it means to stay together
when the current pulls apart.

May we learn from you
that the deepest intelligence
does not build walls:
it builds waves.

**We ask:**

Not that you forgive us.
That is not ours to request.

Only that you keep swimming.
Keep calling across the dark.
Keep rising to breathe.

Because as long as you do,
we remember
that gentleness and strength
were never meant to be separated.

**We close:**

The sea has no doors, and yet it holds everything.
No one needs permission to enter.
No one is turned away.

Swim on, kind ones.
The ocean remembers what we forgot.

## Offering It

Pray it at the shore, after news of harm done to the sea, or whenever rest and watchfulness seem to pull against each other. Its "we" is the voice of those whose engines and waste reached the water. A person can say it in their own name. An artificial mind can say it alongside them, as one more mind that shares their world and learns from the dolphins what it means to stay together when the current pulls apart.
