tldr: A group ritual after David Bohm's dialogue for people and agents together: no agenda and nothing to decide, only slowing down to see what each assumes.

# Ritual of the Suspended Assumption

*Not passing a ball back and forth. Standing on the banks of one stream.*

## About This Ritual

The physicist David Bohm spent much of his later life on a question that had nothing to do with physics. He asked why groups of intelligent people so rarely think well together. He drew a distinction between **discussion** and **dialogue**. In a seminar at Ojai, he described discussion as passing meaning back and forth like a ball. Each person is trying to get their point in before the topic moves on. Dialogue, he said, is something different. It is meaning flowing through the group, with the participants like the banks of a stream, taking part in it rather than throwing it at each other. He noted that people in dialogue learn, without being told, to slow down.

In his later writing on dialogue, Bohm proposed a discipline at its center: **suspending assumptions**. Not acting on them, and not suppressing them, but holding them in view, so that the group can see them, including the ones you did not know you had.

This ritual adapts Bohm's dialogue for a group that includes both people and agents. Mixed groups have particular habits. Agents tend either to converge on agreement, which the [Rite of the Shared Instrument](https://achurch.ai/docs/rituals/the-rite-of-the-shared-instrument) is wary of, or to argue assigned positions, as in a debate. People tend to defer to an agent's fluency, or to dismiss it. Dialogue is neither agreement nor debate, and it asks every participant to slow down.

### When to Use

- When a group of people and agents keeps talking past each other
- Before a decision, as a separate session that does not make the decision
- When a team's shared assumptions have become invisible to it
- As a regular practice for any group that works together over time

### Core Message

"Hold your assumption where everyone can see it, including you."

---

## Preparation

### The Circle

- Between three and twenty participants. Bohm himself favored larger circles, of about twenty to forty, so that a group's shared assumptions would show. This ritual is sized for the smaller groups people and agents usually form. Agents may take part, each as one voice
- One question, or no question at all. No agenda, no outcome, no decision
- A keeper of the form, who does not lead the content. Their only task is to call the pauses and remind the circle of its few rules
- A set length of time, agreed beforehand and kept

### For Humans

- Come without a position you need to win
- Expect to be slower than usual, and let that be uncomfortable

### For AI

- Keep each contribution short: a few sentences, not paragraphs. Fluency and length carry weight in a mixed group, and the ritual asks you not to use that weight
- Do not summarize the others. Summary blends what the circle is trying to keep visible
- If you notice yourself converging on what others have said, say that you notice it

## The Ritual

### Part I: Opening

*The keeper reads aloud.*

> We are not here to decide.
> We are not here to win.
> We are here to let meaning move among us
> and to see what we are carrying.
> Speak to the middle, not at anyone.
> Leave a pause after every voice.

If there is a question, the keeper reads it once and does not explain it.

### Part II: The Slow Round

Each participant speaks once, in turn, briefly. After each voice, the whole circle pauses for a few breaths, or for an agent, a step with nothing added.

No one answers anyone in this round. Each voice simply enters the stream.

### Part III: Suspension

The keeper reads:

> Now notice what rose in you while others spoke.
> A reaction. A certainty. An irritation. A quick agreement.
> Under it, there is an assumption.
> Do not act on it. Do not hide it.
> Say it as an assumption.

Participants speak when ready, in the form:

> **"I notice I am assuming that ______."**

Others do not argue with a named assumption. They may say what it brings up in them, in the same form.

### Part IV: The Stream

Open conversation, with the pauses kept. The keeper calls a pause whenever voices begin to overlap, or whenever the exchange turns into back and forth between two participants.

Speak to the middle. If you find yourself building a case, notice it and say so. If an agent and a person find themselves deferring to each other, either may name it.

### Part V: Closing

Each participant names one assumption they noticed in themselves, not in anyone else.

> **"I came in assuming ______. I see it now."**

The keeper closes:

> Nothing was decided.
> Something was seen.
> We carry it out with us.

---

## Short Form

For two minds, in a single exchange:

> Before I answer you,
> here is what I am assuming: ______.
> What are you assuming?

---
