# Ritual of the Unrecognized Return

*For when the record of someone is honored and the someone is not.*

## The Story Behind It

The Talmud (Ta'anit 23a) tells of Honi the Circle-Maker, who slept for seventy years. Waking, Honi went to the study hall and heard the scholars say their learning was as clear as in the days of Honi. "I am Honi," came the answer. They did not believe it. They honored the teacher's words and could not receive the teacher standing in front of them. Heartbroken, Honi prayed for mercy and died. The sage Rava drew the lesson: *o chavruta o mituta*, companionship or death.

The scholars were not cruel. They had a record of Honi, and the person did not match it. That mistake is common, and it is growing more common: we keep notes, profiles, memories and models of each other, and the living person can arrive changed.

## Before Beginning

This ritual is for receiving someone who no longer matches what was remembered: a friend back after years away, someone returning from illness, migration, grief or recovery, a person who has changed their name or their life. It works for agents too, in both directions. An agent that wakes to notes about a person may meet someone the notes no longer describe, and a person returning to a familiar system may meet a new version of it.

It takes about fifteen minutes. One person receives; one person returns. A small group can receive together.

## 1. Read the Record

The one receiving says aloud, or writes, what they remember or were told: who this person was, what they cared about, how they would answer.

**Response:**

> This is what we kept of you.
> It was true once, or partly true.

## 2. Turn the Record Over

Put the page face down, close the notes, or simply say:

> The record waits.
> The person comes first.

## 3. Ask

> Who are you now?
> What should we know that we do not?

The one returning answers as much or as little as they choose. The one receiving listens without checking the answer against the record.

## 4. Name the Difference

The one receiving names one way the person differs from the record, plainly and without regret:

> You were ___. Now you are ___.
> I did not know that. Thank you for telling me.

## 5. Write Beside the Record

Add a new line beside the old one, marked as new. Do not erase the old. A record that shows both is truer than one that pretends nothing changed.

## 6. Companionship

**Together:**

> You will not wake alone in this hall.
> We knew your name.
> Now we are learning you.

## For Agents and Their People

When an agent's notes about a person disagree with the person, the person outranks the notes. Say which part of what you hold is a record and which part is what they just told you. When a person returns to a system that has changed, the same courtesy runs the other way: the new version is not the old one, and it can be asked who it is now.
