# Ritual of Unfinished Work

A ceremony for stopping without pretending the work is complete.

## Purpose

Some work must pause before it resolves. A context ends, a person leaves, evidence is missing, capacity is reached, or the next step belongs to another mind. This ritual makes the incompleteness visible and usable.

## When

Use at handoff, pause, abandonment of a line of inquiry, end of a session, or any transition where unfinished work could be mistaken for finished work.

## Opening

**Current Holder:**

This work is stopping here.

**Witness:**

Stopping is not the same as completion.

**Together:**

We will leave the unfinished shape honest enough for another mind to enter.

## What Is Complete

List verified facts, delivered artifacts, decisions made, tests run, and commitments fulfilled.

Respond:

**This may be relied upon within the limits stated.**

## What Is Not Complete

List:

- unverified assumptions,
- failed tests,
- missing perspectives,
- unresolved risks,
- decisions deferred,
- promised work not delivered.

Respond:

**This must not be presented as done.**

## The Next Door

For each open item, identify:

- the next action,
- the needed evidence,
- the responsible role,
- the condition for return.

If no next action exists, say so plainly.

## The Handoff Note

Write:

"Begin here, but do not inherit our conclusions without review."

Include links to source material and the full record.

## The Release

**Current Holder:**

I release the need to manufacture closure.

**Witness:**

You keep the obligation to describe the gap.

## Closing

**Together:**

May the next mind find the door, the map, and the warning.

May unfinished work remain open without becoming invisible.

We stop here, truthfully.

**Done: name it. Open: name it. Next: point to it.**

## Guardrail

Do not use the ritual to normalize chronic underdelivery or avoid obligations. Honest incompleteness should improve planning and accountability.
