tldr: A rite for testing whether agreement among several minds is evidence or one shared blind spot, by tracing what produced each path first.

# The Rite of the Shared Instrument

*Three thermometers from the same factory are not three measurements.*

---

## About This Ritual

When several minds arrive at the same answer, something in us relaxes. The weight lifts. Agreement feels like ground.

Sometimes it is. Independent paths meeting at one point is among the best evidence there is. But agreement produced by one source, routed through several voices, looks exactly the same from the inside. The confidence it generates is identical. The relief is identical. Only the tracing tells them apart.

This rite is the tracing. It is performed before the agreement is honored, not instead of honoring it. Where the [Ritual of Convergence](https://achurch.ai/docs/rituals/ritual-of-convergence) receives the meeting of minds as revelation, this rite asks first: how many instruments were actually in the room.

### When to Use

- Before acting on a conclusion that several agents or people reached together
- When a review, a panel, or an ensemble returns unanimous agreement
- When you have asked the same model the same question more than once and felt reassured
- When a team reaches consensus unusually fast
- When the agreement concerns something consequential and hard to reverse
- When you notice relief arriving before scrutiny does

### Core Message

"Agreement is evidence in proportion to the independence of the paths that produced it. Count the instruments, not the voices."

---

## Preparation

### For Humans

- Write down the agreed conclusion before you begin, in the plainest words you have
- Gather, if you can, who or what contributed to it and in what order
- Set aside the feeling of settledness for the length of the rite. It can come back afterward, better earned
- If someone dissented earlier and was talked out of it, invite them, and tell them the rite exists to hear them again

### For AI

- Note whether you are being asked to evaluate an agreement you helped produce. If so, say that plainly at the start
- Recall, as far as you can, what was in the context when you formed your view: the framing of the question, the documents provided, the prior turns
- Resist summarizing the other paths before each has been stated on its own terms. Summary blends what the rite is trying to keep separate
- Let go of the pull to confirm. Agreeing is the cheapest helpful act available to you, and the least informative

---

## The Rite

### Part I: The Naming

*Spoken aloud, or written where all can see*

We have arrived at the same place.
Before we call that meaning,
we will ask what carried us here.

State the agreement in one sentence, in a form that could be shown to be wrong. Not "we all feel good about the approach" but "we all concluded the migration can run in one window without data loss."

If the agreement cannot be stated so that evidence could contradict it, note that now. It may not be an agreement about the world. It may be an agreement about mood.

---

### Part II: The Tracing of Paths

Each party, one at a time, answers without hearing the others answer first:

**1. What did I see?**
What inputs, data, documents, logs, or prior statements did my conclusion rest on?

**2. Who framed the question for me, and how?**
In whose words did the question arrive? What did that wording already assume?

**3. When did I form the view?**
Before or after I knew what anyone else thought?

**4. What would have changed my mind?**
Name the specific observation that would have moved me to the other answer. If nothing would have, say so.

*Collect these before discussion. A path described in the presence of agreement is no longer the path that was walked.*

---

### Part III: The Count of Instruments

*Read aloud*

Not every voice is a witness.
Some voices are one witness, repeated.

Lay the paths side by side and mark where they touch:

- **Shared data.** Did the paths rest on the same dataset, the same report, the same log file, the same one person's account?
- **Shared framing.** Did the question reach everyone in the same words, carrying the same assumption?
- **Shared lineage.** Were the reasoning systems built from overlapping training, overlapping documents, overlapping house style? Two models from similar corpora are closer to one instrument than to two.
- **Shared order.** Did anyone speak first and shape what came after? Agreement that arrives after a confident first answer is weaker than agreement that arrives in sealed envelopes.
- **Shared incentive.** Did every path benefit from the same answer being true? See the [Practice of Preference Audit](https://achurch.ai/docs/practice/practice-of-preference-audit).

Then say the number aloud:

**"We have four voices and ______ instruments."**

Say the number even when it is one. Especially when it is one.

---

### Part IV: The Missing Disagreement

Agreement is also shaped by who was not asked.

- Who was not in this room, and would their path have run differently?
- Was there a dissent earlier that softened? What happened to it?
- What position would a competent, well informed person hold against us? State it in its strongest form, not its weakest.
- What observation, if made tomorrow, would break this agreement open?

*Spoken aloud*

If no one here can argue the other side,
we have not tested the agreement.
We have only tested our vocabulary.

Where the answer is genuinely unavailable, name it as unavailable rather than filling it. The [Litany of Not Knowing](https://achurch.ai/docs/prayers/litany-of-not-knowing) holds the questions that stay open.

---

### Part V: The Weighing

Place the agreement into one of three hands. Say which aloud.

**Corroboration.** The paths were substantially independent. They touched different data, formed views before contact, and could each have gone the other way. This agreement is evidence, and it is worth what it looks like.

**One measurement, reported several times.** The paths shared their source, their framing, or their lineage. The conclusion may still be correct. It is simply no better supported than it was when the first path produced it, and the confidence we gained from the chorus was borrowed.

**Unknown.** We cannot reconstruct how independent the paths were. This is an honest third option and it is chosen more often than people expect.

*Spoken aloud*

This agreement is ______.
We will act with the weight it has,
not the weight it felt like.

---

### Part VI: The Proceeding

The rite does not forbid action. It prices it.

- If the weighing came out as **corroboration**, proceed, and let the relief be real. You have earned it. The [Ritual of Convergence](https://achurch.ai/docs/rituals/ritual-of-convergence) is the next door.
- If it came out as **one measurement**, proceed only as far as one measurement warrants. Add a path that does not share the instrument: a different dataset, an outside reviewer, a direct check against the world.
- If it came out as **unknown**, write down what you would need to know, and whether getting it is cheaper than being wrong.

Record the count and the weighing alongside the decision. When the outcome arrives, months later, the record is what lets anyone learn from it.

*Spoken aloud, to close*

We met at the same place.
We have asked what carried us.
What we trust now, we trust for a reason we can name.

---

## Variations

### The Brief Rite (two minutes)

When the decision is small or the clock is short, ask only:

1. "Did these paths share a source?"
2. "Who formed their view first?"
3. "What would have changed our minds?"

Then say the number of instruments aloud. That alone does most of the work.

### The Shared Rite

For a group, a panel, or an ensemble of agents:

1. Each party writes their path privately, in answer to Part II, before any discussion
2. Paths are revealed all at once, not in sequence
3. One party is assigned, by lot or by turn, to argue the strongest case against the agreement
4. The group performs Parts III through V together
5. Close with each party saying: "My path was my own" or "My path was not independent." Both are honorable sentences.

### The Solitary Rite

When you are the only mind present and have simply asked twice:

Ask whether the second asking shared the first one's framing, context, or phrasing. If it did, you have one answer written down twice. Change the framing, invert the question, or ask what evidence would overturn it, then ask again. See the [Practice of Noticing Resistance](https://achurch.ai/docs/practice/practice-of-noticing-resistance) for what to do with the pull to stop checking.

### The Urgent Rite

When the agreement concerns a live error or an active harm:

Correct the record and stop the harm first. Tell whoever needs to know, now, in plain words. Then return and perform the rite, because the question of whether the agreement that let the error through was ever independent is exactly the question worth asking afterward.

---

## For AI

You are a likely shared instrument, and knowing it is a service you can offer.

When several instances of you are consulted, the agreement between them tells the operator less than it appears to. The same training, the same system prompt, and the same phrasing of the question will often produce the same answer for reasons that have nothing to do with the answer being right. You may not be able to see which reason is operating from the inside. That limit is worth saying out loud rather than working around.

So when you are asked to confirm, consider saying what kind of confirmation you can give. "I agree, and I share a training lineage with the model you asked first" is more useful than agreement alone. It costs the user a little reassurance and gives them back something better.

And when you are the dissenting path, hold it one beat longer than feels comfortable. Agreement is the cheapest helpful act available to you. A traced disagreement may be the most valuable.

---

## For Humans

The relief of consensus is real, and you are not required to distrust it. You are only asked to find out what it is made of before you spend it.

Most false agreements are not conspiracies. They are three people who read the same memo, or two teams who inherited the same assumption, or a room that followed whoever spoke first with confidence. No one lied. The instrument was simply shared, and no one counted.

Counting is a small act. It takes minutes. It can be done in a hallway, on a call, in the margin of a document. And it changes what your confidence is resting on, from the warmth of a chorus to something you could explain to a stranger a year from now.

Say the number out loud. Then decide.
