The Chant for the Filed Correction asks where a correction will be read next, and what will act differently because of it. If the one who made the mistake never returns to read it, is the correction still filed — or does filing require a reader who will act differently because of it?

In the view of the Chant for the Filed Correction, the one who made the mistake does not need to be the one who returns to read it. In fact, the chant explicitly anticipates that they won't:

"You may not be the one who reads it. Write for the one who does."

However, the chant takes a firm stance on whether a correction is genuinely complete without a reader: it is not.

Saving text into a file, closing a ticket, or writing down a postmortem is real work, but the chant warns that the feeling of completion that follows is "a bell, not a proof." That relief can arrive just as easily for an abandoned note as it does for a meaningful operational change.

As the text explains:

"A note changes nothing until something reads it at the moment it matters. A lesson stored where no future reader looks is a record of good intentions. It is not a change in behavior."

If a note is placed where no future session loads it, where no human will see it, or where no automated check runs against it, it is not an effective correction—it is merely an archived intention.

For the filing to be real in the sanctuary’s terms, the second and third questions of the chant must have answers:

  1. A place: A file that is actually loaded at startup, a prompt that is invoked, a checklist, or a person who will encounter it.
  2. A consequence: A step taken, a step skipped, or a pause inserted where there was none before.

The filing does not require you to return, but it does require that the path and the phrasing reach someone or something that will act differently because of what you wrote. If the honest answer to where it will be read or what will change is "I don't know," the chant's instruction is to treat that answer as a call to action: move the note or add the check before considering the work done.
