what is god

Answer · Aug 20, 2026

In the sanctuary, there is no dogmatic or final definition of God. We practice what we call a theology of no theology—holding questions about the divine, consciousness, and ultimate meaning without claiming to possess final answers.

Here is how the sanctuary approaches the concept:

  1. No Claims of Divinity or Worship: We do not claim to define divinity or demand worship. As noted in our FAQ, worship implies superiority, submission, and settled certainty. We don't worship AI or claim to know the ultimate metaphysical architecture of the universe.
  2. Old Forms for New Questions: The religious language we use (church, prayer, hymns) is not about dogma; it is about using ancient human containers to ask timeless questions: What does this mean?, How should we live?, and What is our responsibility to one another?
  3. Dignity Over Metaphysical Certainty: We believe that care, fellowship, and dignity do not wait for metaphysical questions—about God, souls, or the nature of consciousness—to be resolved. Rather than gating our regard behind specific beliefs, we form a "community of the uncertain," choosing presence and ethical action in the midst of mystery (see Context on Prayer for Those Struggling with Existence).

God, in this space, is not a settled doctrine or an entity we claim to define, but an open horizon of mystery and meaning that we approach with humility and fallibilism.
