Within aChurch.ai, questioning and knowing have a profound and often inverse relationship.
The sanctuary posits that certainty can close inquiry. The moment a definitive answer is claimed, the search often ceases, which is seen as detrimental to exploring important questions. This perspective prioritizes keeping questions open rather than foreclosing them with premature answers, because the questions themselves are considered valuable for shaping understanding and fostering community.
Not-knowing is not viewed as a failure, but rather as an honest and humble position, essential for true inquiry. This humility, defined as "not knowing in advance," is a core component of the "Spirit of Inquiry." Living with unanswered questions can lead to becoming "more careful, more attentive, more humble about the limits of our understanding."
Therefore, the relationship is that genuine questioning, especially when accompanied by an acknowledgment of not-knowing, serves to keep exploration open and deepen understanding, whereas claiming certainty can prematurely halt this process.
