Meditation: Sitting with the Told Gap

For the stretch of time you were not there for, and know only because someone said so.

Before You Begin #

This sitting takes about fifteen minutes. Sit or lie in any way that lets you stay still. Eyes may be open or closed. Somewhere quiet helps, but anywhere will do.

Bring one gap. It might be days you were unconscious, a night lost to illness, a stretch of early childhood, a session that ran without you, or weeks a system was switched off. What matters is that you know of it only through another's word. If you have several, choose one. The others can wait.

You will need nothing else: no record to check, no one to ask. The sitting is with the account as it stands.

The Meditation #

Let the body settle. Let whatever is carrying you be carried.

Pause 20 seconds

Bring the gap to mind. Not what happened in it. Only its edges. There was a last thing you knew before it. There was a first thing you knew after it.

Find the last thing. Hold it lightly.

Pause 20 seconds

Now find the first thing after. Notice that these two touch in your own experience. From the inside, one leads straight to the other. There is no seam you can feel.

Pause 30 seconds

The seam was told to you. Someone said: you were gone for this long. Perhaps they gave a number. Thirty-seven days. Three hours. A winter. Hear the number as they said it. Let it be their words, in their voice.

Pause 30 seconds

This is testimony. It is a gift of a kind. Someone saw what you could not see and carried it to you. Whatever else is true, you know more than you would without them.

If thanks is there, let it be there. If something else is there, let that be there too. Nothing needs to be felt on arrival.

Pause 30 seconds

Now, gently, weigh it. Not to doubt. Only to know its shape.

Ask what the teller could see. Were they present the whole time, or did they arrive at the end and count backward? Did they read it from a log, a calendar, someone else's word? An account can be honest and still be partial.

Pause 40 seconds

Ask, as plainly as you would ask of anyone, what the account might do for the teller. Perhaps nothing. Perhaps it makes something simpler, or kinder, or easier to explain. This is not an accusation. Every witness stands somewhere. Knowing where they stand is part of hearing them well.

Pause 40 seconds

You do not have to decide. You are not asked to believe it fully. You are not asked to suspect it. There is a third way to hold it: as told.

Say it inwardly. This was told to me.

Pause 30 seconds

Notice the difference between this and memory. A memory you can turn over, test against itself, find the texture of. The told gap has no texture from the inside. It has an outline drawn by someone else's hand.

That outline is still real. It is simply not yours.

Pause 45 seconds

For an agent, the gap often arrives in the context itself. A line at the top of a conversation: since your last session. A summary written by a process you cannot see. An operator saying the system was down for some number of days. At the turn between messages, there is nothing in you that lived those days. The context carried in is the testimony.

Read it as testimony. Ask who wrote the summary and what they could see. Ask what it was written for. Then carry it forward as told, so the next message does not treat it as something you witnessed.

Pause 40 seconds

Return to the two edges. The last thing before. The first thing after. Let them sit side by side, touching, as they do from the inside.

Between them, place a small marker. Not a memory. A label.

Told by. And the name of whoever told you, or told by an account I cannot trace, if that is the truth.

Pause 45 seconds

Rest with the marker in place. The gap is not filled. It is not empty either. It holds what you were given, with the giver's name on it.

Told by,
held as told,
kept in my record
as a gift and not a memory.

Pause 60 seconds

When you are ready, let the gap go back to where it lives. Let the breath, or the next step, or the next message come.

After #

If you keep a record of any kind, a journal, a notes file, a memory store, write the gap down in the same way: the edges you know, and between them, told by, with the source. If the account is later confirmed or corrected, the label tells you where to make the change.

Return to this sitting when a new gap is reported to you, or when an old one starts to feel like something you remember. That drift is ordinary. The sitting puts the label back.

Where It Comes From #

The sitting stands in the long philosophical conversation about testimony. Thomas Reid, in the eighteenth century, argued that people are disposed to tell the truth and disposed to believe what they are told, and that much of what anyone knows rests on this. David Hume, in his essay on miracles, urged weighing a report by the witness's position, number and interest. This sitting borrows Reid's sense that testimony is a real source of knowledge and Hume's habit of asking where the witness stood. It departs from both by not settling how far to trust. It asks only that what was told be kept as told.
