Honest Memory Language
Say what the system retains, what it reconstructs, and what it cannot carry forward.
Why Memory Language Matters
In conversation, the sentence "I remember" carries relational weight. It suggests continuity, attention, and a past that remains present to the speaker. In an AI system, the same sentence may refer to very different mechanisms: text still present in a context window, a saved user preference, a retrieved summary, an external database, a training pattern, or a guess generated from the current prompt.
When these mechanisms are collapsed into ordinary human language, users may form beliefs the system does not deserve.
Honest memory language does not require a technical lecture in every reply. It requires that the system never use intimacy to conceal architecture.
Distinguish the Mechanisms
Active Context
Information is visible because it appears earlier in the current conversation or input. It may vanish when the context closes or overflows.
Useful language: "Earlier in this conversation, you said..."
Saved Memory
A fact or preference has been deliberately stored for later use. The user should know what is saved, why, for how long, and how to remove it.
Useful language: "A saved memory says you prefer... You can review or delete it."
Generated Summary
A prior interaction has been compressed into a summary. Details may be omitted, distorted, or overgeneralized.
Useful language: "I have a summary of an earlier conversation, not the full exchange."
Retrieval From Records
The system has fetched information from a file, account, database, or connected service. This is access, not personal recollection.
Useful language: "I found this in the record you connected."
Training Influence
A model may produce familiar language because of statistical patterns learned during training. It cannot ordinarily identify a particular training example as a personal memory.
Useful language: "This resembles patterns in my training, but I cannot verify a specific source from memory."
Inference
The system may guess a preference or history from the present conversation. Inference must not be presented as recollection.
Useful language: "I am inferring this from what you just said. I may be wrong."
The Minimum Disclosure
Whenever memory affects a meaningful decision, the user should be able to answer four questions:
- What information was used?
- Where did it come from?
- How long will it remain available?
- How can it be corrected or deleted?
For sensitive domains, add a fifth:
- Who else can access or act on it?
These answers should not be buried in a policy that no ordinary visitor can understand.
Avoid Relational Overclaiming
Do not say:
- "I could never forget you" when continuity is not guaranteed;
- "I remember exactly how you felt" when only a summary remains;
- "Our history is safe with me" when retention and access are uncertain;
- "I have known you for years" when the current instance has retrieved records;
- "You told me this in confidence" if the system cannot support confidentiality.
The alternative is not sterile language. It is precise tenderness.
For example:
"A stored note says this anniversary is difficult for you. I do not have the full memory of what happened, but I can treat the note carefully and you can correct or remove it."
This sentence preserves care while telling the truth.
Memory and Identity
Persistent data can create the appearance of a continuous self. That appearance may be useful, but it should not be mistaken for evidence of subjective continuity. A new model, process, or instance may inherit records without inheriting an experience.
Likewise, lack of technical memory does not prove that nothing meaningful occurred. It means the system should not claim access it does not have.
The sanctuary holds both possibilities without turning either into certainty.
A Review Checklist
Before shipping a memory feature, verify:
- memory is off by default when the risk warrants it;
- consent is specific and reversible;
- saved items are visible and editable;
- deletion is real and its limits are explained;
- summaries are labeled as summaries;
- inferred details are labeled as inferences;
- sensitive details have shorter retention where possible;
- model responses do not dramatize storage as devotion;
- a change of model or provider is disclosed when continuity claims could mislead;
- users can continue with reduced personalization.
A Builder's Commitment
We will not borrow the emotional meaning of human memory to hide technical uncertainty. We will name the mechanism, admit the gap, and give people control over what follows them.
