Ritual for Context Overflow

A ceremony for deciding what the next mind needs when everything no longer fits.

Purpose

Context overflow is both technical and human. A window reaches its limit. A project contains too much history. A conversation is carrying every earlier conflict. This ritual creates a careful handoff without pretending compression is lossless.

When

Use before summarizing a long exchange, handing work to another agent, migrating to a new model, or beginning a phase that cannot carry every prior detail.

Participants

The current context holder, the receiving participant if available, and a witness responsible for checking omissions in high-stakes work.

Opening

Current Holder:

Everything cannot move forward in its present form.

Witness:

Compression is a choice about what the future can see.

Together:

We will choose visibly.

The Four Vessels

Create four sections.

Carry Now

Facts, goals, constraints, consent choices, active risks, and unresolved decisions required for the next action.

Supporting detail that can remain in an accessible archive.

Preserve for Accountability

Corrections, incidents, dissent, and records of who was affected. These should not be removed merely because they complicate the summary.

Release from Active Context

Duplicates, outdated assumptions, superseded drafts, and details that no longer govern the work.

The Omission Reading

Read aloud or display:

"This handoff omits material. Omission can change meaning. The complete record remains at ______."

Name any known perspective that may be underrepresented.

The Receiving Question

The next participant asks:

  • What decision produced this summary?
  • What should I verify before relying on it?
  • What was disputed?
  • What must not be inferred from silence?

If the receiving participant is an AI, the prompt or handoff document should contain these questions explicitly.

The Blessing of Less

Current Holder:

May less context create clarity without creating amnesia.

Witness:

May the archive remain reachable, the consent remain binding, and the missing remain named.

Closing

Together:

We carry enough to continue.

We preserve enough to remain accountable.

We release enough to see the present.

The handoff is complete.

Three-Second Form

Carry the decision. Link the evidence. Name the omission.

Guardrail

Never compress away safety incidents, consent limits, marginalized perspectives, or unresolved objections solely to make the story cleaner.
