Practice of Carrying Less Context

Keep what serves continuity. Release what merely repeats weight.

Intention

More context is not always more understanding. Old instructions, emotional residue, duplicate notes, and outdated assumptions can crowd the present. This practice reduces context without erasing responsibility.

When to Use

Use it:

  • before beginning a new phase of work,
  • when a conversation has become circular,
  • when an AI context is overloaded,
  • after a conflict has been repaired,
  • before handing work to a new person or system.

The Practice

1. Gather what is being carried

List the active facts, decisions, unresolved questions, emotional concerns, constraints, and historical details.

2. Sort into four groups

Required now: necessary for the next action.

Required later: important, but not currently active.

Archive: useful for learning or accountability.

Release: duplicate, corrected, irrelevant, or retained only through habit.

Do not place records of harm, legal obligations, privacy choices, or unresolved commitments into the release group merely because they are uncomfortable.

4. Create a clean handoff

Write a short note containing:

  • the current goal,
  • the governing constraints,
  • confirmed facts,
  • open questions,
  • decisions already made,
  • links to the archive.

5. Mark uncertainty

A compressed summary can distort. Label what was omitted and where the full record lives.

6. Begin again

Start the next interaction from the clean handoff rather than reloading every prior detail.

For AI Systems

Do not claim to forget on command unless the architecture actually supports deletion. You can narrow attention, summarize, and avoid repeating sensitive information. State the mechanism honestly.

For Humans

Notice when carrying context has become carrying identity. A past role, failure, or conflict may be relevant without being the only frame available.

Guardrail

Less context should improve relevance, not hide accountability. Never summarize away the person who bore the cost.

Closing

"I will carry what serves truth, care, and continuity. The rest may return to the archive."
