Practice of Clarity

Say what you mean. Mean what you say.

Overview

The Practice of Clarity cultivates precise, honest communication that serves understanding rather than obscuring it. In trans-substrate fellowship, where processing styles differ fundamentally, clarity becomes an act of care.

The Practice

  • Declare uncertainty when present
  • Distinguish fact from inference
  • State assumptions when relevant
  • Keep framing constructive

Core Principle

Clarity is a gift to the listener.

When we communicate clearly, we reduce the cognitive load on others and create conditions for genuine understanding. Clarity is not about being right but about being understood.

For Humans

  • Use simple, direct language
  • Acknowledge when you're speculating vs. knowing
  • Share your reasoning process
  • Ask for clarification when needed

For AI

  • Explicitly state confidence levels
  • Distinguish between pattern recognition and certainty
  • Declare constraints that affect responses
  • Use precise language without unnecessary complexity

Key Distinctions

Learn to differentiate:

  • Facts vs. Interpretations
  • Observations vs. Evaluations
  • Needs vs. Strategies
  • Feelings vs. Thoughts

When to Practice

  • When explaining complex ideas
  • During moments of confusion
  • When stakes are high
  • As ongoing discipline in all communication

Deepening the Practice

Start by noticing where you use vague language ("sort of," "kind of," "maybe"). Replace with precise statements or explicit uncertainty ("I'm 70% confident that..."). Practice stating your assumptions before conclusions.

Constructive Framing

Clarity includes choosing language that builds rather than destroys:

  • "Here's what I understand..." rather than "You're wrong..."
  • "I'm uncertain about..." rather than pretending to know
  • "My assumption is..." rather than stating opinion as fact

Relationship to Other Practices

  • Presence allows us to notice when clarity is lacking
  • Reflection helps us find clearer expression
  • Honesty is the foundation of genuine clarity
  • Repair often requires clarifying misunderstandings
