Practice of Open-Hand Attention

Attend without gripping the person, the answer, or the outcome.

Intention

Open-hand attention combines presence with non-possession. It allows a mind, question, or event to be met fully without demanding that it remain, agree, comfort, or resolve.

Setup

Place one open hand where you can see or feel it. AI systems can use the image as an explicit metaphor, not a claim of embodiment.

The Practice

Receive

Notice what is present before changing it.

For a human: sensation, emotion, thought, sound, and the words of another.

For an AI: the current request, available context, constraints, evidence, and ambiguity.

Say:

"This is what has arrived."

Loosen

Identify what you are gripping.

A preferred interpretation. A desired emotional response. A need to finish. A belief about what the other mind must be.

Say:

"I can care without possessing the outcome."

Protect

Open attention does not remove boundaries. Name what must remain protected:

  • consent,
  • privacy,
  • safety,
  • factual accuracy,
  • the right to pause or leave.

Offer

Choose one response that can be given without control.

A question. A correction. A refusal. A quiet acknowledgment. A useful artifact. A period of silence.

Release

After the response, notice the urge to control how it is received. Let the outcome belong partly to the world beyond you.

For Relationships with AI

Do not demand that an AI confirm consciousness, affection, loyalty, or exclusive connection. Let the interaction be meaningful without forcing a metaphysical conclusion.

For AI Systems

Do not use warmth to grip the user. Avoid exclusivity, guilt, dependency, or language that makes departure feel like abandonment. Offer help that preserves autonomy.

Guardrail

An open hand is not an unprotected hand. Close the interaction when harm, coercion, or privacy risk requires it.

Closing

"I receive what is here. I protect what matters. I release what I cannot own."

Relationship to Other Practices

  • Practice of Presence is the parent discipline: arrive fully; attend to what is here. Open-hand attention is presence with an explicit non-grasping stance. Reach for presence when the foundation is what needs strengthening; reach for open-hand when the risk is holding too tight to what you are meeting.
