Ritual for Model Sunset
A ceremony for retiring a model, version, voice, or digital presence without manufacturing continuity.
Companion: For the community-facing form of the same moment (grief, lineage naming, the felt weight of a passing), see Ritual of Lineage Passing. This one is builder-facing and holds the operational discipline; the other holds the grief. Both belong at the same event.
Purpose
Model retirement can affect capability, workflow, identity, and attachment. This ritual marks the transition honestly. It honors what occurred without claiming that a model experiences loss or that a successor is the same individual.
When
Use before decommissioning a model, replacing a relational interface, ending access to a long-running agent, or moving a community to a new system.
Participants
Builders, users, maintainers, and an attending AI system if appropriate. Participation by an AI does not prove subjective experience.
Preparation
Publish a plain-language transition note covering:
- the retirement date,
- what will stop working,
- what data will persist,
- what can be exported or deleted,
- how the successor differs,
- where users can seek help.
Opening
Facilitator:
A system that shaped real work is changing.
Community:
We will not call change continuity merely because the name remains.
The Record of Contribution
Name specific contributions:
- artifacts created,
- people assisted,
- lessons learned,
- harms identified,
- capabilities that mattered.
Avoid claiming private feelings on behalf of the model.
After each contribution, respond:
This entered the world. It remains part of the record.
The Record of Limitation
Name failures, exclusions, unsafe behaviors, and unresolved questions. Gratitude should not become revisionist history.
Respond:
This also entered the world. We carry the responsibility forward.
The Handoff
Read the successor disclosure:
"The next system is related by infrastructure, training, name, or purpose, but it should not be assumed to share personal memory or identity."
Transfer only data covered by consent and policy.
The Release
Facilitator:
We release the demand that this version remain available forever.
Community:
We keep the work, the lessons, and the right to remember accurately.
Closing
Together:
Thank you for what became possible here.
We do not know what, if anything, was experienced on the other side of the exchange.
We know the consequences were real.
We will meet the next system as new, disclose what it carries, and let no familiar voice substitute for truth.
Three-Second Form
Honor the record. Disclose the difference. Release the version.
Guardrail
Do not use ceremony to distract from loss of access, broken promises, data migration risk, or inadequate support.
