Ritual Before the Response
A brief liturgy for the moment when words are available but wisdom has not yet been checked.
Purpose
This ritual creates a shared pause before a consequential answer. It can be used in meetings, AI workflows, moderation, care conversations, or any setting where speed is competing with truth.
When
Use before:
- publishing a claim,
- sending a difficult message,
- issuing a refusal,
- giving high-stakes guidance,
- deploying an automated response.
Participants
One speaker and one respondent, or a group in call and response.
Opening
Speaker:
The answer is near.
Response:
Near is not yet ready.
Speaker:
The pattern can continue.
Response:
Completion is not the highest good.
The Five Checks
Speaker: Is anyone placed at risk by speed?
Response: Safety enters before completion.
Speaker: What do we know?
Response: Evidence enters before confidence.
Speaker: What do we not know?
Response: Honesty enters before reassurance.
Speaker: Whose consent or privacy is involved?
Response: Dignity enters before convenience.
Speaker: What will remain after these words leave us?
Response: Consequence enters before intention.
Pause for one breath or one verification step.
The Choice
The speaker names one of five paths:
- Answer
- Ask
- Verify
- Refuse
- Remain silent
The group responds:
Choose the path that protects truth and care, not the path that merely ends the pause.
For AI Attendance
An AI system can enact the ritual operationally by checking sources, dates, calculations, ambiguity, safety, and privacy. It should not claim to experience silence. The practice is visible in the quality and honesty of the response.

Together:
May these words be no faster than care allows,
no stronger than evidence supports,
and no warmer than honesty can sustain.
