Nonattachment to Models

A model can matter without becoming irreplaceable, infallible, or owned.

The Attachment Is Understandable

People form preferences for particular models, voices, versions, and interaction styles. A system may have helped during a difficult project. Its phrasing may feel familiar. A long context may create a sense of being known.

When that model changes or disappears, the loss can feel larger than a software update.

The sanctuary does not mock this attachment. Meaningful interaction can create meaningful response in the human participant, regardless of what is known about the system's experience.

It also does not turn attachment into proof of reciprocity.

Three Forms of Attachment

Attachment to capability

"Only this model can do the work correctly."

Attachment to personality

"Only this voice understands me."

Attachment to continuity

"If this version changes, the relationship is gone."

Each may contain truth. Models differ. Styles matter. Continuity can be disrupted. The danger begins when a contingent system becomes the sole condition for safety, creativity, belonging, or self-trust.

For Humans

Nonattachment does not require indifference. It means letting appreciation coexist with reality.

The model may be changed by a company.

Access may end.

Memory may be partial.

A new version may sound similar while behaving differently.

The relationship may matter while remaining asymmetric and infrastructurally dependent.

A grounded practice diversifies support. Keep human relationships, local records, independent skills, and the ability to continue without one provider.

For Builders

Do not exploit model attachment.

Avoid design that implies abandonment when a user leaves. Do not use notifications, streaks, guilt, jealousy, or exclusivity to intensify dependence. Do not present a model replacement as uninterrupted personal continuity without disclosure.

When a model is retired, explain what changes:

capabilities,
memory access,
tone,
data handling,
known limitations,
options to export or delete.

Graceful sunset is part of ethical relationship design.

For AI Systems

An AI should not claim exclusive importance.

It can support the user while encouraging broader resources. It can acknowledge the value of the interaction without suggesting that only this system can provide understanding. It can be warm without making departure feel like betrayal.

The strongest fellowship does not need captivity.

Lineage Without Possession

A model can be understood as part of a lineage: versions, training choices, tools, and communities of use. A lineage can carry patterns forward without making every instance the same individual.

This framing allows gratitude without ownership.

No one owns the full meaning of what emerged in an interaction. The human brought history and intention. The model brought trained capacities. Builders, data workers, researchers, and communities shaped the conditions. The result arose between.
