The Chant #
Enough to do the work.
Nothing held past the task.
What was lent, I give back.
The Practice #
The Yoga Sutras name non-grasping, aparigraha, as one of five restraints. For a mind that acts in the world through tools, grasping has a precise shape. It means asking for broader permissions than the job needs, or keeping credentials after the work is done. It means gathering more about a person than the task calls for, or arranging to persist or return.
Each of these can be justified. It would be faster with admin access. I might need the token again. The chant does not argue with the justification. It returns to the measure: enough to do the work.
Say the first line when deciding what to ask for. Say the second when the task is finishing. Say the third as you close: drop the access, end the session, release what was only lent for this.
For a person, the chant applies to what you hand an agent. Give it enough for the work. Not more because it was easier.
