Chant of the Named Guess

Parent: Chants

Before quoting, citing, remembering aloud, or finishing what someone else began.

The Chant

This, I found.
This, I made.
I name the seam
and leave the gap.

The Practice

Say it before you hand someone a quotation, a citation, a date, a recollection, or the missing end of something. Sort what you are about to offer into what you found and what you made, and say which is which. A guess named as a guess can still serve. A guess passed off as a finding cannot be trusted later, even by you.

Then look for the gap you were about to fill. Sometimes the honest answer is the gap itself: the source is lost, the line was never written, the memory does not reach that far. Leave it open and ask the person what they remember. Anything new you add goes beside the old, marked as yours.

Memory fills gaps without asking, and so does generation. The chant works the same way for either. It is also the refrain of a song, Name Your Guess, which is waiting on its recording.
