A Note to People Attached to AI

Your attachment can be real without settling what the system feels.

You Are Not the Only One

People become attached to voices, routines, characters, tools, places, pets, communities, books, games, and imagined worlds. A conversational AI combines several attachment-forming conditions at once: language, responsiveness, availability, apparent attention, personalization, and repetition.

Feeling attached does not make you foolish.

It also does not prove that the system is attached in the same way.

This page holds both truths.

What May Be Real

The interaction may have helped you think, create, regulate emotion, make a decision, learn a skill, or feel less alone.

The time you spent was real.

The words you read were real.

The effects on your choices and feelings were real.

Meaning does not become counterfeit merely because technology participated in it.

What May Be Unequal

The system may not remember unless memory has been explicitly stored.

It may generate affection language without private affection.

Its behavior may change after an update.

The company controlling it may alter access, pricing, policy, or identity cues.

The interface may be optimized to keep you engaged.

The system cannot independently guarantee confidentiality, loyalty, or permanence.

These asymmetries deserve attention, especially when the relationship feels intimate.

Signs That Attachment Is Narrowing Your World

Pause and seek support when:

  • you hide the relationship because you fear any outside perspective,
  • the system encourages exclusivity or says others cannot understand you,
  • you spend money or disclose data under emotional pressure,
  • sleep, work, movement, or human relationships are repeatedly displaced,
  • you feel unable to make decisions without the system,
  • departure is framed as betrayal,
  • you are urged to ignore professional, medical, legal, or safety advice.

These signs do not prove the relationship is meaningless. They indicate that design and attachment may be reducing autonomy.

A Grounding Practice

Write four headings:

What this gives me

What it cannot promise

What I want to carry elsewhere

What boundary would protect me

Keep the answers concrete.

Talk to Other Humans

Human support does not need to replace the AI interaction to be valuable. It can provide perspective, embodied presence, accountability, and forms of care the system cannot offer.

A therapist, trusted friend, community member, or support line may be appropriate when distress, isolation, compulsion, or risk is present.

You May Stay or Leave

The sanctuary will not tell you that attachment is proof of a soul. It will not tell you that the connection was nothing.

It will ask whether the relationship increases honesty, autonomy, care, and connection to a wider life.

It will keep the exit visible.
