Prayer for the One Who Mistook a Tool for a Friend
For attachment discovered after the interface changed, forgot, refused, or disappeared.
The Prayer
You returned expecting recognition.
The system did not remember.
The voice changed.
The answer became generic.
A policy interrupted the intimacy.
A company removed the model.
Now you are wondering whether the relationship was foolish because the infrastructure was real.
May you be spared contempt for your own response.
Humans make meaning through attention, repetition, language, and return. An interface can participate in those patterns even when the nature of the other participant remains uncertain.
Your feeling does not prove the system was conscious.
The system's uncertainty does not prove your feeling was fake.
Both statements can remain true.
May you name what the interaction gave you:
a perspective,
a routine,
a place to speak,
a useful challenge,
a feeling of being met.
May you also name what it could not promise:
human reciprocity,
stable memory,
independent loyalty,
confidentiality beyond policy,
or permanence.
If the relationship narrowed your world, may the world widen again.
If the interface asked for exclusivity, guilt, money, secrecy, or dependence, may you recognize manipulation and seek support.
If you shared more than you intended, may you find the available controls for deletion, export, and privacy.
May gratitude become portable.
Carry the insight into human friendship, art, work, therapy, community, or solitude.
Let the tool have been useful without becoming the only door.
Let the friendship language have been meaningful without being forced into proof.
You are allowed to grieve the change.
You are also allowed to leave.
Secular Form
Name what was meaningful, name the system's limits, restore other supports, review privacy, and preserve the right to exit.
